Lake Nacimiento ~The Dragon~

Lake Nacimiento was formed by the damming of the Nacimiento River, and when full has 165 miles of shoreline and is 17.3 miles long.       The shoreline of the lake is shown here at a maximum water level 800' above sea level.  It is normally at its highest level in March and April.  It remains close to this level through July, being drawn down gradually to an average elevation of 748' by November.  It then fills again with the winter rains.  A very dry year may alter this sequence.

The Narrows, over 6 miles long when the lake is full, is a popular Sunday afternoon area for those who enjoy the lake.

Fishing is popular year round and includes largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and white bass.  White bass are not found in any other California lake.

Water skiing. wake boarding, air chairing, tubing, wake surfing, and jet skiing are particularly popular on Lake Nacimiento because of the many protected coves and general lack of high winds.  Sailing and kayaking can also be enjoyed.

All boats and water craft require a permit for lake use, which can be obtained at the Oak Shores Community launch ramp at the Green Iron Ranger box, at Lake Nacimiento Resort, as well as Lake San Antonio.  The Monterey County Parks Department maintains a Slalom Ski course and floating rest rooms.

Lake Nacimiento is a census-designated place located in San Luis Obispo County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,176.
